André Øvredal’s terrifying film follows Austin (Emile Hirsch) and Tommy (Brian Cox), a father-son team of coroners tasked with examining a body found partially buried beneath a brutal crime scene. They dub the anonymous woman Jane Doe (Olwen Catherine Kelly) and lay her naked corpse on their examining table for the invasive procedure. As they cut into her flesh, they discover that Jane Doe is much more than a cadaver.  She is a centuries-old witch created by viscous torture who has been lying dormant in the earth since her execution during the Salem Witch Trials. With each layer Tommy and Austin peel away from her bones, they awaken her powers. Jack the Ripper Jack the Ripper  was an unidentified serial killer active in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1888. In both criminal case files and the contemporaneous journalistic accounts, the killer was also called the  Whitechapel Murderer  and  Leather Apron . Attacks ascribed to Jack the Ripper typically involved women working as prostitutes who lived and worked in the slums of the East End of London. Their throats were cut prior to abdominal mutilations. The removal of internal organs from at least three of the victims led to speculation that their killer had some anatomical or surgical knowledge. Rumours that the murders were connected intensified in September and October 1888, and numerous letters were received by media outlets and Scotland Yard from individuals purporting to be the murderer.   American History Did you know that in 1884 the first production standard electric car capable of reproducing and selling to the public was introduced? Did you know that in the early 20th century, 1/3 of all vehicles in circulation were electric? They began to disappear rapidly around 1920 with the introduction of gasoline and Henry Ford. Ferdinand Porsche, founder of the sports car of the same name, produced an electric vehicle called 'P' in 1898, before creating the world's first hybrid offering, which ran on both electricity and a combustion engine. Mercedes-Benz also offered an electric model called the Mercedes Mixte, in 1906. This car was adopted as a taxi in cities and even became a race car in 1907. Rarely, some people managed to survive the gas chambers and were not killed immediately afterwards. One such person is Gena Turgel and her story is more than astonishing. Norman had relatives in Chicago, but the family delayed putting plans to move there into action, and Poland was quickly conquered by the Germans. In the Jewish ghetto of Krakow Gena lost two brothers fighting against the Nazis. She was then sent to Plaszow concentration camp, where she survived for two and a half years until her transfer to Auschwitz. Waist Slashing Or Cutting Of Waist Waist slashing or waist cutting known as cutting the waist in two, was a form of execution used in ancient China. As the name implies, it involved the condemned being cut in two at the waist by an executioner. Many people did not die immediately after being cut. Gao Qi, a poet of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), was sentenced by the Hongwu Emperor to be cut into eight parts for his politically satirical writing. In the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), an episode not attested to in official histories relates that Yu Hongtu, Henan's education administrator, was sentenced to a waist slash. After being cut in two at the waist, he stayed alive long enough to write the Chinese character cǎn (慘; "miserable, horrible") 7 times with his own blood before dying. After hearing this story, the Yongzheng Emperor abolished this form of execution.
