From Red Beach, Lae. Shortly after it fought its way ashore at Scarlet Beach near Finschhafen The Huon Peninsula campaign, advanced to Lae & Sio.Wau & Mubo campaign between 22 April and 14 July 1943, The battle formed part of the wider Salamaua–Lae campaign, and was fought in the early stages of the campaign. The battle followed the successful defence of the airfield around Wau.
Would have been a real tough place to fight an enemy, let alone deal with the hot and humid weather and diseases like Malaria, Dengue Fever and Scrub Typhus, which were common to New Guinea, and all were potentially fatal.
Many soldiers who survived these diseases were left badly weakened and often suffered permanent ill health as a result.
Lest We Forget.
