In August 2019, a scuba diver suffered a grotesque accident while fishing off the coast of Scottsburgh (KwaZuku-Natal, South Africa)
The 48-year-old freediver, with more than 30 years of experience, committed a serious oversight at the end of the underwater fishing trip; he loaded his rifle just before swimming to shore.
While he was swimming, the trigger of the pneumatic rifle was accidentally pressed and the rod shot towards the man's face, piercing the skull laterally from side to side.
The diver, despite the terrible shock, managed to reach the beach, where some passers-by saw him and immediately raised the alarm.
The man was rushed to hospital and the doctors there were surprised to discover that the unfortunate diver was perfectly conscious. The rifle shaft had penetrated the right temporal bone (just above the jaw), emerging next to the left orbit.
Miraculously there was no damage to the facial nerves of the man who, later interviewed by a local TV, said:
"I made a stupid mistake dictated by my excessive confidence in what has always been my passion.
The moment the spear of the rifle pierced my head, my vision blurred and, immediately after, I began to see double as if I had taken some hard drug... but I couldn't stop, continuing to swim was the way to go. my only way of salvation.
The pain then "exploded" when I managed to drag myself onto the beach and I clearly heard the screams of the people near me calling for help.
I therefore invite all those who cultivate my passion not to repeat the foolish thing I did."
