Dachau Concentration Camp and Heidelberg
This is hard…with each recap of the day I try to put in the words and post pictures to give an idea of the adventures we have experienced. With Dachau, it’s impossible. The tour through the camp provided a really good idea of everything that took place here from 1933 to 1945 when it was finally liberated by US troops. It is incomprehensible what took place and it left all of us shook from the knowledge we took away. A total sobering experience.
We said goodbye to Munich and began the long journey to Heidelberg, a small historic town just south of Frankfurt. The city was abuzz when we arrived and we quickly unloaded our bags (my goodness we overpacked) and hit the streets. Heidelberg is a university town and there were a lot of students on bikes zipping around town. We found a grassy courtyard and unwound for a good hour before deciding to find a dinner spot.
If you know my daughter you know she loooves pasta and she found a beautiful Italian restaurant in another courtyard and she took command, asked for 1 menu and told us she was ordering for the table. She ordered a pizza, chicken carbonara , and shrimp gnocchi. The food was out of this world and chatting with the waitress was so fun. I really enjoying these small intimate moments talking with the locals and learning about their lives.
After dinner we walked the cobble stone roads exploring the town. We walked through a few shops that were still open, had ice cream, and walked the bridge late into the evening. At this point most of the people had retired for the night and we really enjoyed the quiet and peacefulness of the city. The highlight was standing on the bridge over the Neckar River and admiring the castle all lit up in the distance.
So grateful for today and one I won’t soon forget…
