A Woman Let Strangers Do Whatever They Wanted To Her Body For 6 Hours — And The Results Were Awful

A Woman Let Strangers Do Whatever They Wanted To Her Body For 6 Hours — And The Results Were Awful

Yugoslavian performance artist Marina Abramović is the woman many credit as "the grandmother of performance art." She was featured on Sex and the City and collaborated with James Franco.

Somehow, her celebrated 1988 art piece, "The Lovers: the Great Wall Walk" — in which she and her longtime lover and collaborator Ulay started at opposite ends of the Great Wall of China, to meet in the middle as a way of signaling the break up of their 12-year relationship — seems like something that happened over a million years ago now.

In light of the events going on in the world today, her work may perhaps be more intensely important now than it ever has been before, particularly if you are either a woman or someone with a sincere interested in understanding the depth of what women experience.

The premise was deceptively simple. Abramović announced that she would stand absolutely still for the next 6 hours. In front of her, a table was covered with objects and instructions for how they could be used.

The instructions read:

Instructions
There are 72 objects on the table that one can use on me as desired.

Performance
I am the object.
During this period I take full responsibility.
Duration: 6 hours (8 pm – 2 am)

The items on the table were described as being "objects of pleasure" and "objects of destruction." Included among them were a rose, feather, perfume, honey, bread, grapes, wine, scissors, a scalpel, nails, a metal bar, and a gun loaded with one bullet.

When the performance first began, people were tentative and shy, and it seemed as though no one might interact with her at all. Which makes sense, right? She might have labeled herself as an object, but in reality, she was still a person.

Eventually, people got interesting and involved and got the hang of things. Marina was their object, so they moved her position. They poured water on her. They wrapped her up in string.

A simple series of minor humiliations, right?

Before long, however, things took a dark and disturbing turn. Someone touched her intimately. One man cuyt her neck with the razor blade and drank some of her bl00d. By the third hour, her clothes had been cut from her body. She was groped again and sexually assaulted by more than one person.

They carried her through the room half-naked, placed her on a table, and stabbed a knife into the wood between her legs.

At one point, someone put the loaded gun in her own hand and positioned her arm to hold it against her throat.

While Abramović wouldn't call it off, fortunately, another person present intervened as someone moved the artist's own finger to the trigger. When the six hours ended and it was announced that the performance was over.

As she walked through the crowd, not one person who had made use of her and the other objects she'd displayed would look at her, speak with her, or interact with her.

Talking about her performance later, Abramović said “This work reveals something terrible about humanity. It shows how fast a person can hurt you under favorable circumstances. It shows how easy it is to dehumanize a person who does not fight, who does not defend himself. It shows that if he provides the stage, the majority of ‘normal’ people, apparently can become truly violent.”

"They didn’t rape me," she said, "because they were with their wives.”

"Sims acquired a total of eleven women slaves with vesicovaginal fistula from their masters by promising to lodge, board, and treat them, and he built a spartan wooden building, where he conducted surgical experiments on them for the next four years.  During the Victorian period, layers of dress signaled sexual chastity, and doctors were not in the habit of viewing women's unclothed bodies; not even their professional stature gave them license to gaze at women's genitalia. When Sims undertook his fistula experiments, even the term 'gynecology' was a few years in the future. Instead, 'women's doctors' averted their eyes in a chivalrous fashion as they knelt to tend to the modestly clothed ladies of their class, relying upon their sense of touch beneath voluminous Victorian skirts.  However, Sims, working with enslaved blacks, was constrained by no such delicacy. He made the women undress completely, then kneel on hands and knees while he and several phys...

World War II as you've NEVER seen it before! Light-hearted photos of nude British and Allied soldiers revealed in eye-opening new book From the horrors of the Blitz to kamikaze attacks in the Pacific, World War II inflicted terrible suffering on troops and civilians alike. But as these photos reveal, soldiers fighting the war, whether in the Far East or Europe, did enjoy some more light-hearted moments. Hidden away in the attics of former servicemen for more than 60 years, the pictures, which show soldiers from the UK, Australia and the USA among others, shed fresh light on the friendships fostered between the men who fought. His extensive collection includes snapshots of soldiers and sailors from Australia, the UK, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, and the USA, cavorting on the sand in the South Pacific, shivering in the snow of Eastern Europe, posing solo in the barracks, and in great happy groups. Many are barely out of boyhood, at their physical peak and are responding to...

Ana Mendieta, Untitled (Rape Scene), 1973

Ana Mendieta, Untitled (Rape Scene), 1973 "Untitled (Rape Scene) is the documentation of an action that the artist performed in her apartment in Iowa City, while she was a student at the University of Iowa on the innovative Intermedia art course run by the German artist Hans Breder (born 1935).  It was created in response to a brutal and highly publicised rape and murder of a nursing student, Sara Ann Otten, by another student in March 1973. The following month Mendieta invited her fellow students to her apartment where, through a door left purposefully ajar, they found her in the position recorded in this photograph, which recreated the scene as reported in the press.  Some time later, Mendieta recalled that her audience ‘all sat down, and started talking about it. I didn’t move. I stayed in position about an hour. It really jolted them.’ (Quoted in Ana Mendieta, p.127, note 11.) In 1980, she commented that the rape had ‘moved and frightened’ her, elaborating: ‘I think ...

Another man described being abducted from home by five men, driven to a prison, and taken to a “torture room” equipped with ropes, iron rods, a bench and buckets of water. There were bl00d splatters on the wall. A third man described the prisoners as growing accustomed to the sound of screaming. “It made us really scared the first day but then we got used to it because we heard screaming all the time.” R*ped, branded or beaten repeatedly, more than 50 men from the Tamil ethnic minority seeking political asylum in Europe say they were abducted and tortured under Sri Lanka’s current government. The previously unpublished accounts conjure images of the country’s bl00dy civil war that ended in 2009 — not the palm-fringed paradise...

Grunt

"Grunt" -  The term gained widespread usage during the Vietnam War and has since become synonymous with the common foot soldier who bears the brunt of ground combat operations. Grunts are typically involved in the most physically demanding and dangerous aspects of military operations, including patrolling, engaging enemy forces, and conducting direct combat missions. The term reflects both the hardships and the camaraderie shared by these soldiers. In popular culture and military vernacular, "grunt" embodies the resilience, toughness, and essential role of infantry soldiers within the broader framework of military operations. These soldiers are often depicted as the backbone of the armed forces, enduring harsh conditions and significant risks to accomplish their missions.

FORGOTTEN HORROR

After more than 60 years of silence, World War II's most enduring and horrible secret is being nudged into the light of day. One by one the participants, white-haired and mildmannered, line up to tell their dreadful stories before they die. Akira Makino is a frail widower living near Osaka in Japan. His only unusual habit is to regularly visit an obscure little town in the southern Philippines, where he gives clothes to poor children and has set up war memorials. Mr Makino was stationed there during the war. What he never told anybody, including his wife, was that during the four months before Japan's defeat in March 1945, he dissected ten Filipino prisoners of war, including two teenage girls. He cut out their livers, kidneys and wombs while they were still alive. Only when he cut open their hearts did they finally perish. These barbaric acts were, he said this week, "educational", to improve his knowledge of anatomy. "We removed some of the organs and amputate...
