Venezuelan patient d*es after surgeon leaves scissors in stomach
A man’s stomach operation was deemed a success but after he began to complain of pain, an X-ray revealed a shocking find.
A patient has died after bungling surgeons left a pair of scissors in his stomach during an operation.
Ivan Chavez, 59, had gone to the University Hospital of Maracaibo, in Venezuela’s second-largest city, for surgery for inflamed diverticula.
Diverticula are small, bulging pouches that can form in the lining of your digestive system
The operation was hailed a success, but soon after the patient began to experience abdominal pain and difficulty eating and using the bathroom.
Doctors prescribed him different treatments.
However, the discomfort failed to subside and four days after the operation, medical staff decided to perform an X-ray.
This was when they discovered that surgeons had botched the operation and, incredibly, left a pair of scissors in his stomach.
The patient underwent emergency surgery to extract the scissors, which, again, was deemed successful.
Yet in a tragic turn of events, he died five days later, with his family reportedly blaming negligent surgeons.
They claim medics had hidden his true condition from them and were trying to pretend everything had gone without hitch.
They also say the staff at the hospital only notified them about Ivan’s death a whole two hours after he died.
It is not known if his next-of-kin intend to file a lawsuit against any of the surgeons who operated on him in either procedure.
Venezuela’s healthcare system is said to be crippled by the country’s severe and long-running economic crisis.
Dire conditions have forced many thousands of doctors and nurses to migrate abroad in recent years.
